Just stumbled on this interesting research about safe and affordable places to live in America, and honestly some of these hidden gems surprised me. Turns out if you're willing to look beyond the major metros, there are actually solid options where you can find both low crime and reasonable housing costs.
The data shows Ohio dominates the list with 7 cities making the top 15 - places like New Philadelphia, Parma Heights, and Mount Vernon where you can snag a home for under $230k and keep your annual living costs under $38k. What caught my attention is how the violent crime rates in these towns stay incredibly low, often under 1 per 1,000 residents.
If you want to explore safe and affordable places to live outside Ohio, there are some interesting alternatives. San Elizario in Texas has the lowest home prices around $167k with minimal crime. New Ulm, Minnesota offers excellent livability scores (82) with an ultra-low violent crime rate of just 0.29 per 1,000. Even smaller towns like Yorktown, Indiana and Columbus, Indiana show you don't need to sacrifice safety for affordability.
The research ranked these based on FBI crime data and total cost of living analysis, so the numbers are solid. Most of these communities have annual living costs between $35k-$45k, which is pretty reasonable. The livability scores vary but several hit the mid-to-high 70s and 80s.
Obviously these aren't trendy destinations, but if your priority is finding safe and affordable places to live without the big-city price tag and crime concerns, this list seems like a legitimate starting point. Worth checking out if you're considering a move or just curious about where Americans can actually afford to live these days while staying in safe neighborhoods.
