Recently, I discovered in Discord that many newcomers are completely confused by the slang used in the crypto community. What do words like HODL, FUD, WAGMI actually mean? I’ve decided to organize a summary to help everyone avoid pitfalls.
First, let’s talk about the most classic term: HODL. This word actually originated from someone misspelling it in 2013, but it ended up becoming a community mantra. Simply put, it means holding onto your coins and not selling, no matter how much the market dips. I’m also a HODLer; after experiencing several crashes, I finally understood that HODL isn’t about blind holding but about staying committed based on long-term faith.
Next is FUD, a term that appears very frequently in trading communities. FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt, usually referring to negative news or rumors that create panic in the market. You need to understand what FUD means to avoid being driven by market emotions. Sometimes, when a big influencer posts a tweet, the FUD spreads everywhere, and retail investors panic and start selling off. I’ve seen too many people get wrecked because they didn’t understand what FUD really means and sold at the bottom.
In contrast, WAGMI is the other extreme—pure optimism. It means “We’re All Gonna Make It,” a collective cheer during bull markets. During the NFT craze, every day on Discord was WAGMI WAGMI, and that atmosphere was truly inspiring.
GM and GN seem simple—Good Morning and Good Night. But in the crypto community, they’re more than just greetings—they’re a form of cultural identity. Seeing a bunch of GM replies on Twitter every morning shows how active this community is.
DYOR is also very important—doing your own research. No matter how talented others seem, they can’t make decisions for you. When I first entered the crypto space, I didn’t do proper research and blindly bought a bunch of trash projects. Only later did I realize the importance of DYOR.
Finally, let’s talk about REKT. Just hearing the word sounds terrible. It means being completely wrecked in trading—buying high and selling low. I have a friend who got REKT badly on a meme coin, and since then, he’s been much more cautious.
Learning these slang terms isn’t just about fitting into the community; it’s more about understanding the logic behind them. Next time you see these words on Twitter or Discord, you won’t be clueless anymore. Remember—HODL with faith, beware of FUD and don’t get scared, but also DYOR to avoid REKT. Keep going, we’ll all succeed.
