I've noticed that many newcomers in crypto confuse two important mechanisms — launchpools are one thing, and launchpads are quite another. Although both are used for distributing new tokens, they operate differently.
Let's start with launchpools. A launchpool is essentially a staking platform where you take your existing cryptocurrencies and stake them to earn new tokens from newly launching projects. It's a kind of yield farming — you lock your assets for a certain period, and in return, you receive tokens from the new project. This approach is convenient for projects because they distribute their tokens to the community without a direct sale, encouraging more active participation. Examples of this approach can be found on various DeFi platforms that have reward pools.
Launchpad is a completely different story. It’s a platform through which new projects conduct their initial sales — ICOs, IEOs, or simple token sales. Here, investors buy new tokens directly, hoping for their future growth. Launchpads create a secure environment for these deals by vetting projects and protecting investors. You come in, see an interesting new project, and buy its tokens at the initial price.
What’s the main difference? A launchpool is a mechanism where you receive tokens for staking your assets. A launchpad is a place where you actively buy new tokens with your money. The first approach is more about rewards for participation, the second about investing.
Another difference lies in the goals. Launchpools are designed for deeper community engagement — people stake assets, earn rewards, and become interested participants in the project. Launchpads primarily help projects attract capital through direct token sales to investors.
The distribution method also differs. In a launchpool, tokens are automatically credited through staking your assets. In a launchpad, you choose how much you want to buy and make a direct purchase.
Both tools are important for the crypto ecosystem. Launchpools are a great way for beginners to access new projects without risking large sums — just stake what they already have. Launchpads allow projects to quickly raise the necessary capital and launch on the market. If you're interested in new tokens, it’s important to understand both mechanisms and use them depending on the situation. On Gate, you can track different opportunities to participate in new projects through both channels.
