AIGC is a hot keyword recently, but I think many people still don't really understand what it is. Simply put, AIGC stands for AI Generated Content, which refers to technology that automatically creates content using artificial intelligence. Unlike PGC or UGC, AI takes the lead in producing all kinds of content—text, images, videos, audio, and more.
ChatGPT is one of the most successful examples in this field. I heard that within a month of its release, the monthly active users surpassed 100 million, which shows how influential it is. It’s not just limited to Q&A; AI can follow instructions to generate images, and it’s already at a practical level.
Looking back at the development history of AIGC, the turning point was the emergence of GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks) in 2014. This system involves a generator and a discriminator competing and learning from each other, forming the foundation of modern AIGC technology. Later, in 2020, AIGC also started to make significant inroads in the blockchain space. A platform called Art Blocks was launched by Erick Snowfro, where algorithmically generated art is recorded as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain.
Not long ago, the CEO of a major exchange announced the official launch of an AI product called Bicasso. Users simply input a description, and the AI can generate a new NFT based on their personal artwork. This was the first implementation of an "image-for-image" application in the blockchain field.
Until 2021, AIGC was mainly limited to text generation, but the new generation models now support text, images, audio, video, and even actions. The speed of AIGC’s evolution in 2022 has been truly astonishing. At the beginning of the year, it was still in development, but within a few months, it reached a professional level.
Looking ahead, as AIGC matures, the realization of the metaverse will no longer be just a pipe dream. With the help of AI, content creation time and effort can be greatly reduced, unlocking infinite creativity and applications. The metaverse will be able to produce high-quality content rapidly and will develop exponentially.
Perhaps in a few years, AI chips will emerge that allow users to explore virtual worlds infinitely. Just as ChatGPT is changing the world now, AIGC will lead a new era of the metaverse in the Web3.0 age.
