Reported Acquisition Would Be OpenAI’s Largest to Date
OpenAI is reportedly set to acquire Windsurf, an artificial intelligence-powered coding startup, for approximately $3 billion, according to sources cited by Bloomberg News. The agreement, which has not yet closed, would represent OpenAI’s most significant acquisition to date.
Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, has recently been in discussions with investors such as General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins to raise funding at a valuation near the $3 billion mark. The company was previously valued at $1.25 billion following a $150 million funding round in August 2023.
The acquisition is expected to bolster OpenAI’s existing developer tools, particularly its coding assistance features integrated into ChatGPT and other products. OpenAI has continued to upgrade coding-related capabilities in successive model updates, positioning itself competitively as AI tools become more widely used by developers and software teams.
While not specifically a fintech acquisition, the deal reflects the growing importance of AI-assisted development across sectors, including fintech, where speed, compliance, and automation in coding are becoming critical advantages.
Neither OpenAI nor Windsurf have commented publicly on the reported deal, and the terms could still be subject to change.
