The wealth of the world's richest people reached a historic increase of $2.2 trillion in 2025
The world’s wealthiest individuals experienced unprecedented wealth growth in 2025. According to data from an international financial institution’s billionaire index, the combined assets of the 500 richest people on the planet expanded to a historic $2.2 trillion throughout the year. This growth increased their total net worth to $11.9 trillion, highlighting an increasingly concentrated wealth distribution.
Expanding global markets drove wealth accumulation
This growth was not isolated to a single sector. Financial markets experienced simultaneous expansion across multiple fronts: from the dynamism of stock exchanges to the recovery of cryptocurrencies, and the revaluation of precious metals. This widespread asset growth was the main driver propelling these magnates’ wealth to new heights.
Artificial intelligence played a key role in this scenario, as global enthusiasm for AI continued to boost the growth of major U.S. tech corporations, especially those focused on developing and deploying AI solutions.
Tech giants captured most of the growth
The technology sector was the undisputed leader of this wealth surge. Leaders of companies like Oracle, Tesla, Alphabet, and Amazon capitalized on the tech boom with significant increases in their company values. The AI revolution and sustained growth in the digital sector solidified these giants’ dominant position in global wealth accumulation.
Wealth concentration among eight billionaires
A particularly notable fact illustrates how wealth tends to become increasingly concentrated among a very small circle. About a quarter of the total growth in 2025 came from just eight individuals: Larry Ellison (Oracle president), Elon Musk (Tesla CEO), Larry Page (co-founder of Alphabet), and Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon), among others.
However, this concentration showed a significant change compared to the previous year. While in 2024 these eight billionaires contributed 43% of total wealth gains, in 2025 their share dropped to 25%. Although still high, this decrease suggests a more dispersed distribution of growth among other wealthy individuals on the index.
Future outlook for the world’s richest
The trends of 2025 demonstrate that the wealthiest people continue to benefit from expanding global markets and technological transformation. The ongoing role of AI as a growth engine and the diversification of assets (stocks, cryptocurrencies, real estate) suggest that wealth accumulation in these segments could remain high in the coming years.
