Abstract generation in progress

The mobile screen industry continues to evolve with increasing demand for foldable devices. Samsung Display, as a leader in high-tech OLED panel production, is now deepening its commitment to support Apple’s future plans to release foldable iPhones. The South Korean company is currently conducting a comprehensive review of its manufacturing expansion strategy.

Major Investment Plan at A4 Asan Factory

According to the latest report from Jin10, Samsung Display is considering allocating significant investment funds to increase OLED panel manufacturing capacity at their strategic location. The A4 factory in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, has been chosen as the development hub. This plan demonstrates Samsung Display’s long-term commitment to meeting the global demand for increasingly popular foldable display technology.

The decision to focus investment on the A4 factory reflects Samsung Display’s mature strategy in managing large-scale OLED production capabilities. This investment not only involves adding new facilities but also optimizing existing infrastructure to achieve maximum efficiency.

Focus on Backplane and TFT Technology Development

The primary focus of this expansion project is a significant enhancement in the backplane process, particularly in the production line for thin-film transistors, known as TFT. This technology is the backbone of modern OLED panel manufacturing, affecting the quality and durability of the final display.

Enhancing TFT capabilities will enable Samsung Display to produce OLED panels with higher precision and better production consistency. This is a strategic move given the strict specifications required for flagship foldable devices like those planned by Apple.

Production Launch Expected in the Second Quarter

The overall strategic direction has been set by Samsung Display’s senior management. An internal review process regarding the scale and details of the investment is ongoing, and after the evaluation phase is complete, capital expenditure is projected to begin in the second quarter of this year. This timeline indicates a well-planned execution of their OLED production expansion.

These steps position Samsung Display as a key supplier of cutting-edge OLED display technology for Apple’s foldable device ecosystem, while also strengthening their dominant position in the global premium display market.
