U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a large natural gas power plant planned to be built in Ohio by Japan will become the largest of its kind in the United States, with a power generation capacity capable of meeting the electricity needs of millions of households. According to an investment overview released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Japan is expected to invest $33 billion in the project, led by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said in a statement on Tuesday that the plant’s installed capacity will reach 9.2 gigawatts. This scale is roughly equivalent to nine traditional nuclear reactors, and when operating at full capacity, it can supply power to the grid operated by PJM Interconnection, the largest electricity grid operator in the U.S., meeting the electricity needs of approximately 7.4 million households. If completed, this Ohio plant will surpass the 7.65 gigawatt natural gas project planned by Pacific Energy Group in Texas and will rank among the world’s largest natural gas power plants — Dubai Electricity and Water Authority states that its Jebel Ali Power Plant is the largest gas-fired power station in the world, with a capacity of 9.55 gigawatts.
