In 1929, Livermore shorted US stocks and made $30 million; 11 years later, he committed suicide.
In 1934, Gann published "45 Years on Wall Street," with an accuracy rate of over 80%, leaving his account with only $300,000 at age 63.
The fatal flaw of these two "gods of speculation" was actually the same.
We always think the hardest part of trading is finding the Holy Grail.
Gann spent his life inventing angle lines, geometric charts, and time cycles—
He said he could predict the Dow Jones 100%,
But his son wrote in his memoir:
Father never made a good living from trading; he was obsessed with proving he was right.
The real thing that killed the masters was not the market,
But treating tools as faith.
Gann lived in a modest apartment in Brooklyn in his later years.
He once spread out a table full of charts and told his son:
Look, the fluctuations of 1912—I drew them back in 1909.
His son asked: Then why are you still broke?
Suddenly, the air became very quiet.
Someone who can predict the market for the next 50 years
Still couldn’t predict his own account going to zero.
It’s not a failure of technique,
But confusing prediction with trading—
The former seeks correctness, the latter seeks victory.
People who are right often wait for victory but are already exhausted by their own correctness.
It reminds me of a parable.
