Japanese stock market closes lower; as of the close, the Nikkei 225 index fell by 1.07%

Investing.com – The Japanese stock market declined on Friday, led lower by sectors such as paper and pulp, transportation, and communications.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index fell by 1.07%.

The best-performing stock in the Nikkei 225 was Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. (TYO:5706), which rose by 5.44% (1,615.00 points) to close at 31,290.00. Meanwhile, IHI Corporation (TYO:7013) increased by 5.18% (216.00 points), closing at 4,384.00; Sumitomo Electric Industries (TYO:5802) gained 4.59% (428.00 points), ending the session at 9,748.00.

The weakest-performing stock was Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506), which dropped 15.60% (457.50 points) to close at 2,475.50. Olympus (TYO:7733) declined by 4.39% (68.00 points), closing at 1,480.00; Seven & I Holdings Co. (TYO:3382) fell 4.26% (97.50 points), ending at 2,191.00.

Out of 2,665 stocks traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, more declined than advanced—949 stocks—while 215 stocks remained unchanged.

Olympus (TYO:7733) stock dropped to a low, decreasing by 4.39% (68.00 points) to close at 1,480.00. Sumitomo Electric Industries (TYO:5802) stock reached a record high, rising 4.59% (428.00 points) to close at 9,748.00.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures implied volatility of Nikkei 225 index options, increased by 4.23% to 29.07.

WTI crude oil futures for April options rose by 0.48% (0.32 points), reaching $66.72. In other futures, the April delivery London Brent crude oil futures increased by 0.49% (0.35 points), to $72.01, while April gold futures rose by 0.84% (42.19), trading at $5,039.59.

USD/JPY increased by 0.08%, to 155.17; meanwhile, EUR/JPY declined by 0.04%, to 182.42.

The US dollar index futures rose by 0.04%, to 97.89.
