On February 10, 2026, the first plenary session of the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) for 2026 was held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo Member Wang Yi attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. This SOM is the first official event hosted by China as the APEC host in 2026, aimed at preparing and accumulating成果 for the informal leaders’ summit in November. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions around the theme of “Building an Asia-Pacific Community for Shared Prosperity” during China’s APEC Year, focusing on three priority areas: openness, innovation, and cooperation. The discussions further expanded consensus on advancing trade and investment cooperation, deepening the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area construction, enhancing connectivity, strengthening digital economy cooperation, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development. A series of成果 proposals and work plans were also put forward for the year. All parties highly appreciated China’s firm commitment to regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and expressed their support for China’s hosting, jointly striving to achieve fruitful results for APEC China Year and contribute more to the development and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. Before the SOM, over 50 meetings of APEC committees and working groups were held from February 1 to 9, covering areas such as economic and technical cooperation, trade and investment, food security, science and technology, anti-corruption, personnel exchanges, health, and customs. More than 1,400 representatives from member economies, the secretariat, observers, and the Business Advisory Council attended the SOM and related meetings. APEC is the most important economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia-Pacific region. As the 2026 host, China will hold approximately 300 meetings and events throughout the year. The second Senior Officials’ Meeting and related events are scheduled to take place in Shanghai in May. (Ministry of Foreign Affairs website)
