According to the latest announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO), the passage at the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt has recently been reopened, allowing for full-scale patient transfers. This development marks a significant turning point for the people of Gaza, who are facing a severe medical crisis due to ongoing conflict.

First Patient Transfer—Five Patients Accompanied by Medical Staff

According to a WHO spokesperson, five patients, accompanied by seven medical professionals including Egyptians, were transported through the Rafah crossing to Egypt. This historic transfer is recorded as a symbol of the reopening of the corridor between the two countries. The patients are reported to have a range of medical needs, from injuries sustained in combat to chronic illnesses.

Over 18,500 Patients Await Transfer—Urgent Medical Needs

Currently, more than 18,500 patients identified by Gaza’s medical authorities are waiting for transfer, still seeking access to treatment. These patients suffer from conflict-related injuries, cancer, diabetes, and other serious conditions. UNICEF reports that over 3,000 of these patients are children, highlighting the severity of the pediatric medical crisis.

Gaza’s health authorities are now working to prioritize treatment within limited medical resources, and urgent efforts are underway to establish humanitarian response and cooperation with Egypt.
