An interesting PR in Bitcoin Core has attracted attention: developers are submitting patches for version v29 to fix a known vulnerability CVE-2025-46598.

The question is—why patch old versions?

The root cause lies in a major change in v30: proposal #32406 removed the 80-byte limit on the OP_RETURN opcode. This change altered the default data storage policy, causing behavioral differences between versions.

Some node operators are still using v29. If they do not apply this security patch, they face potential risks. This involves a classic technical dilemma—how to balance advancing innovation with maintaining backward compatibility.

Haha, this is the cost of an upgrade. Some people will always be left behind. There are still a bunch of users on v29. Developers have to take care of these "legacy users," it's really exhausting. Once the OP_RETURN limit is broken, so many issues arise... That's why I never rush to update. Innovation and compatibility at the same time—it's the classic dilemma of both fish and bear's paw. The development team has to balance many challenges. Honestly, this vulnerability caught us a bit off guard. No wonder a patch was needed.

Haha, still need to patch v29. This mess is always like this. Once the 80-byte limit of OP_RETURN is broken down, everything gets chaotic... Nodes still have to compete internally.

This patch for v29 is essentially the old compatibility issue. Are there still people using v30? I see most mining pools are still sticking to v29... Once the 80-byte limit for OP_RETURN is lifted, it can indeed cause some trouble, so this risk needs to be managed.

Haha, that's why a bunch of people are still stuck on v29 and haven't upgraded... security patches need to keep up.
