You can now ask ChatGPT while driving: the first to integrate CarPlay, Apple’s first company to implement voice AI after opening up the platform.

According to 1M AI News monitoring, OpenAI updated ChatGPT on March 31, adding CarPlay support, becoming the first among major AI tools to roll out a dedicated CarPlay application. To use it, you must upgrade your iPhone to iOS 26.4 or higher. This system version was released last week; for the first time, it includes “voice conversation” applications in the categories of apps allowed on CarPlay, and requires developers to apply for Apple’s specific authorization before they can be connected.

The ChatGPT for CarPlay is entirely voice-based as the primary interaction method, and it does not display text or images, meeting Apple’s safety design requirements for driving scenarios. The interface only has two buttons—“End” and mute—and supports viewing a list of past voice conversations. There is currently no wake word; you need to manually open the app in the CarPlay interface to use it. ChatGPT also cannot control vehicle functions or operate the iPhone.

For users who want to ask questions hands-free while driving, this is a new option beyond Siri. Apple’s same access rules are open to all third-party voice AI applications, and ChatGPT is just the first to be in place.
