Anthropic Signs AI Safety Research Collaboration Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Government
ME News message, on April 1 (UTC+8), Anthropic and the Australian government recently signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at collaborating on artificial intelligence safety research and supporting the goals of Australia’s National AI Plan. The agreement was reached after a meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Under the agreement, Anthropic will work with the Australian AI Safety Institute to share research findings on the capabilities and risks of emerging models, participate in joint safety assessments, and carry out research collaboration with academic institutions. In addition, Anthropic will share its economic index data with the Australian government to track AI’s use across various sectors of the economy, its economic impact, and its effects on the workforce, with an initial focus on key industries such as natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. As part of the collaboration, Anthropic announced providing AUD 3 million in partnership funding to leading Australian research institutions to apply Claude to disease diagnosis and treatment, as well as computer science education and research. The specific collaboration involves the Australian National University, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, and the Curtin Data Science Institute. Meanwhile, Anthropic is expanding its “AI for Science” program to Australia and launching an API credits program targeting deep-tech startups. These initiatives mark the beginning of Anthropic’s long-term cooperation and investment in the Asia-Pacific region, and the company is set to establish an office in Sydney. (Source: InFoQ)
