The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released a report on February 18th stating that from January 12th to 16th, armed clashes broke out between pro-government militias and anti-government forces “M23 Movement” in Ruchuru, North Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The conflict resulted in at least 50 civilians killed, many injured, and a large number of people displaced. Additionally, in early January, government forces carried out airstrikes against anti-government armed groups’ positions, causing 11 deaths and approximately 40 injuries. The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo previously announced acceptance of Angola’s mediation, and a ceasefire agreement took effect on February 18th. As of the 19th, both sides had not explicitly confirmed the implementation of the ceasefire. (CCTV News)
