On February 21st, local time, U.S. President Trump posted on his social platform “Truth Social” that he will raise the tariff rate on global goods from 10% to 15%.
In the post, Trump stated, “Based on a comprehensive, detailed, and complete review of the Supreme Court’s decision on tariffs made on the 20th—an absurd, poorly worded, and extremely anti-American ruling”—“effective immediately, the current 10% uniform tariff on goods from all countries will be increased to the legally permitted and tested 15% level.”
Trump said that in the coming months, the U.S. government will determine and announce new legally permissible tariff measures.
On the 20th, during a White House press conference, President Trump announced that he would sign an executive order imposing a 10% import tariff on global goods for 150 days to replace some emergency tariffs previously deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. Trump stated that this executive order would be issued under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. He made these remarks during a press briefing after the Supreme Court ruled his tariff policies illegal. He also indicated that the 10% tariff policy is expected to take effect “in about three days.” Later on the 20th, Trump announced that he had signed the relevant executive order.
Analysts believe that, unlike Trump’s previous tariff increases, this new tariff can only last up to 150 days unless Congress approves an extension.
